Romanian cuisine is definitely not the lightest but this was well earned as I had just been on a walking tour of Bucharest. Sarmale is a traditional dish consisting of pork which is seasoned with spices, garlic and onion, mixed with rice and wrapped in cabbage leaves. I was grateful that the portion wasn’t huge (by Romanian standards!) and the weather was scorching so my appetite was waning. However the sarmale were little rolls of deliciousness and I enthusiastically tackled the dish. I loved the combination with the sauerkraut but I struggled to eat all the polenta, I found it to be quite heavy. Sarmale would be a perfect comfort food during the winter months and I would love to try making it myself.
